Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) said its Fathom electric pickup will begin reaching customers in 2027 with a base price of $28,350, giving the automaker a new midsize, five-passenger entry in the electric truck market. Preorders are scheduled to open in early 2027, followed by deliveries later in the year. Ford has not yet shown the truck’s design.

Buyers will also pay a $1,595 destination and delivery charge, bringing the starting price to $29,945. The figure keeps the truck below the roughly $30,000 level Ford has previously discussed for its upcoming lower-cost electric vehicles.

The Fathom will be assembled at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky. Production will use a new manufacturing approach that Ford refers to as an assembly tree process. The truck represents a broader test of Ford’s effort to lower the cost of developing and manufacturing electric vehicles. It will be the first model produced on the company’s Universal Electric Vehicle, or UEV, platform.

Ford has said the architecture is central to its plan to move the Model e electric vehicle business toward breakeven by 2029. The automaker is targeting profitability for each vehicle built on the platform within one year after launch.

Development of the UEV system has included work by a dedicated Ford team focused on manufacturing efficiencies and new technologies. The company has said its goal is to produce electric vehicles that are closer in price to gasoline-powered models while competing on costs with Tesla and electric vehicle manufacturers in China.

Ford said it believes the platform gives the company a competitive cost position and is aimed at the appropriate part of the market.

The Fathom project is moving forward as electric vehicle adoption in the U.S. has slowed and federal consumer incentives for EV purchases have been eliminated. Ford reported $19.5 billion in restructuring charges related to its electric vehicle operations last year.

The new truck will extend Ford’s pickup lineup into a smaller electric format designed to accommodate five passengers. Ford has spent billions beyond its normal vehicle-development costs on the Fathom and the systems supporting it ahead of the planned 2027 commercial launch.
